Emergency Contact Information

An area paddling club

An area paddling club recently experienced a serious medical emergency during a trip. Even though several members of the group considered themselves to be friends of the victim, no one really knew her well enough to provide any emergency contact information, relevant medical history, current medications or conditions, or any other background to aid responders.

The Mosquito Lagoon Kayakers have developed a basic form you can copy and paste into your word processor and use. A link to it can be found on the bottom of their club’s website homepage at http://www.mosquitolagoonkayakersofvolusiacounty.com/ .

Let me emphasize that the Aquaholics DO NOT have any requirement for you to carry this type of information while paddling with the club, although some local groups do. As a matter of standardization, those groups suggest you keep your info either in your PFD pocket or taped inside the front hatch of your boat, or both.

The bottom line is you can be as low tech or high tech as you want, you can include as much or as little as you want, but it is of no value if you don’t have it with you. I sincerely hope you never have the need for this information to be used. If you do, I am convinced having it available for others to use will be to your benefit (or not depending on what you decide)!!

Other methods of carrying Emergency Contact Info

Goverment Agencies

Other Club's websites that have documents to carry

Should you go this route, you would want to laminate the information, after all you are on teh water - you could print on both sides to keep the card smaller.

If you go to somewhere like Staples to laminate - have several cards done at same time within the same peace of laminate.

Businesses that offer services

  • Road ID - Interactive database, you wear as ID bracelet, etc ($20-35), EMTs can then call or check internet for your data. Annual service cost ($10) to keep your data on the internet. Emergency workers are getting use to this method.
  • Walgreens Care Medical Bracelet $20.  Load your data onto the USB and then wear as a bracelet.  Waterproof.
  • CVS Medical USB Data Card $20.  load data onto, size of credit card with fold out USB.  Must be used with a computer.
  • Medical ID Bracelet - has been around for decades, generally depending on size you can engrave up to 3 lines with up to 12 characters each.
  • Target Medical Alert Bracelet with USB $35  Metal medical bracelet with USB under clasp.  Not waterproof.

Caution: Across the country many EMTS don't have computers on their vehicles and many hospitals do not allow USBs or CDs from a patient in their computers due to potential viruses, etc.

Cell Phones

  • Many of the newer cell phones have a function for listing some of your contacts as ICE: In Case of Emergency
  • Some phones also have a "notes" capability available for use in that ICE section; where you could place information concerning your DRs, allergies, RX, etc.
